It could be the first for Liverpool in six years. But the trophy holds far more value than just a domestic title. It could be the very launch pad the Liver Birds need to help bolster their league position.
In 2001, Liverpool found themselves in a very simliar position where they won the Carling Cup on penities in a game they could have very easily lost against Birmingham. That year was one of their best in recent history, as that win was followed with two more trophies – the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup. They also succeeded in qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.
It would be an emphatic statement to pinpoint the success of that season on that single game, but winning is winning and it can often be the catalayst to triumph.
That little taste of success can leave players wanting the full meal and when its all said and done, football is as much about winning than the astronomical wages club superstars get paid.
Liverpool are also in the quarter finals of the FA Cup and much of their success will depend on whether they can carry through momentum from a Carling Cup win. They face Stock City in that tie, a game where they will be all the more confident in if they can beat Cardiff in the Carling Cup at Wembley.
All in all this remains a pivotal moment in the Liverpool season. If they can clutch the victory, expect to see the kop march up through the FA Cup and to more, the Premier League.
